Dr. Sulaiman Shahabuddin is the President of the Aga Khan University (AKU), a leading institution with nearly 4,000 students across three continents, and a network of seven hospitals and 340 outreach facilities that provide care to over two million patients annually. Since assuming office in September 2021, Dr. Shahabuddin has led AKU through a transformative period—launching the University’s inaugural Strategic Plan, expanding its global presence, and spearheading major initiatives in education, research, healthcare, sustainability, and digital innovation.
A champion of health systems modernization, Dr. Shahabuddin has overseen the successful implementation of Electronic Health Records (EHR) at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi. EHR implementation is now underway at AKU’s hospitals in Pakistan, with an aim to digitize clinical operations, enhance patient care, and improve efficiency. His commitment to digital transformation reflects a broader vision for AKU to harness technology for the public good—whether through data-driven decision-making, cutting-edge research, or digital learning and care platforms.
Before becoming President, Dr. Shahabuddin spent two decades in East Africa, where he served as Regional CEO of the Aga Khan Health Services, which operates four hospitals in Kenya and Tanzania and cares for over one million patients annually.
He holds a BBA and MBA from the Institute of Business Administration in Karachi, a Master’s in Sustainable Development from Imperial College London/SOAS University, and a Doctorate in Health Administration from Central Michigan University.
In recognition of his contributions to education and healthcare, Dr. Shahabuddin was recently awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz by the President of Pakistan.
